2) Opinion Essay: Read aloud with the class the part where Charlie sees all the torture implements in the room. Explain to the students that this idea of torture and pain will be one of the symbols of this book. Have the students write an essay about why they think the author chose to introduce this major symbol of cruelty in such a mysterious fashion. Call on some students to read their work in front of the class.

3) Class Discussion: Read aloud with the class the part where Charlie hears the men say they have no further use for him and must kill him. Discuss this with the class. What do you think this means? What message does this mysterious event send? Why do you think Charlie is so suspicious of those men? Do you think they will really try to kill him? How does this event add to the mystery of these chapters?
